Biography
Shigeaki Asahara (b. 1948) is a Japanese designer born in 1948, best known for his lighting designs created in collaboration with the renowned Italian manufacturer Stilnovo during the 1970s and 1980s. Trained as an industrial designer in Japan, Asahara moved to Italy in the early 1970s, where he became involved in the flourishing Italian design scene. He is the author of several notable lighting pieces, including the Luna Table Lamp (1970), a minimalist design composed of enamelled aluminum and chrome-plated brass, and the Samurai Table Lamp, known for its bold sculptural form and lacquered red metal finish. Both lamps exemplify the fusion of Japanese formal rigor with Italian postmodern experimentation.
During his time at Stilnovo, Asahara contributed to the company’s modernist identity with works that balanced simplicity, geometry, and strong visual presence. Though his production was limited, his designs remain significant examples of 1970s lighting and are included in prominent design auctions and private collections.
