SCAD MUSEUM OF ART
28 FEBRUARY - 1 AUGUST 2022
The South Korean designer Sang Hoon Kim exhibits works at the SCAD Art Museum with a very distinctive and innovative style and technique. This artist is characterised for developing his pieces with foam, a material that has a special meaning for him, as his family has owned a Korean foam factory for three generations. Thanks to his childhood fascination with this material, Sang Hoon Kim began to explore its possibilities until he became the artist he is today.
The singular style of his pieces is due to the unique treatment of textures and the use of different shapes and perspectives that manage to create pieces that blend into the space. His most recent designs are a real delight. They are made of a memory foam that has been chemically modified so that it can expand and become very dense and expansive. All of them, in different shapes and colours, share his abstract style and a rough, dripping surface texture. They give the impression of being objects that have emerged from nature and have been hidden for years or that have come to the surface from another ecosystem.
