Part of the text "I clung to the universe of things…" from the exhibition catalog of Cristina Merchán:

"I started learning and creating ceramics when I was rejected by painting. I had friends there, and they, armed with fierce abstractions, were categorical: easel painting was dead, and everyone expressed only disapproval towards the figures, the significant spots that resembled plants, dreams, and unreal animals that I was painting.

I clung to the universe of things. I loved the presence and gentleness of what participates in everyday life. Ceramics asserted themselves in my eyes as objects. They merged with daily life, with a denser reality, more prosperous than the one that seemed to be mine until then. They did not lend themselves to evasions or loopholes. Ceramics had never allowed themselves to be contaminated by metaphysics".
