Biography
Born in 1919, Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Bernardes was an architectural Star in Brazil during the 1960s. He graduated as an architect in 1948 from the Faculty of Rio de Janeiro, amid the climate of optimism generated by the international recognition of modern Brazilian architecture. Soon after finishing his studies, he quickly became recognized for his residential projects, such as the famous Casa Lota de Macedo Sores (1951), whose originality and the combination of materials such as metal, thatch, glass and stone had a great impact on the panorama of national architecture at the time.
His experiments related to materials and construction methods, created and developed, a lot of the time by himself, are recognisably innovative. As a free thinker, he dedicated himself throughout his career to production, creation, criticism, reflections and experiments that moved through different fields and touched the most varied scales.
