Biography
Mario Botta (Swiss, b. 1943) is a prominent architect and designer recognized for his bold geometric forms and rationalist approach. Born in Mendrisio, Switzerland, he trained as a technical draftsman before studying at the Liceo Artistico in Milan and later at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia, where he studied under Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol. Early in his career, Botta worked with iconic architects Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, experiences that deeply influenced his architectural language. His design work often blends monumental presence with rigorous attention to materiality, particularly in brick and concrete. Beyond architecture, Botta has created furniture and lighting for major manufacturers such as Artemide, Alias, and Alessi. His projects include churches, museums, and public buildings across the globe. In 1996, he founded the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. Botta's work is part of numerous public collections and has been widely exhibited internationally.
