THE MODERN MOVEMENT IN ITALY: ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
MoMA
NEW YORK
1954

The Museum of Modern Art in New York presented The Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design from August 18 to September 6, 1954. Organized by the Department of Circulating Exhibitions and curated by Ada Louise Huxtable during her Fulbright Fellowship in Italy, the exhibition highlighted the variety and vitality of modern Italian architecture and design. It included photographic enlargements, plans, and documentation that showcased a logical evolution of the modern movement in Italy from the 1920s to the postwar period.

Divided into thematic sections, the exhibition featured pioneering work from Giuseppe Terragni, Luigi Figini, and Gino Pollini; reinforced concrete engineering by Pier Luigi Nervi; and comprehensive corporate design initiatives by Olivetti. Also included were innovative interiors, decorative objects, and industrial products by figures like Franco Albini and Ignazio Gardella. The show underscored Italy’s postwar contribution to global design through experimental approaches, material sensitivity, and integrated thinking across architecture and objects.

After MoMA, the exhibition traveled to multiple institutions in North America, including the University of Minnesota, University of Illinois, Portland Art Museum, and M. H. De Young Museum in San Francisco.
