SERPA + ZALSZUPIN

SAO PAULO
GALERIA BERGAMIN GOMIDEZ
SEP 05 2018 - NOV 03 2019

The colour palette used by Serpa, from the 1950s and 1960s, seems to have been transmitted to the coverings chosen by Zalszupin for his upholstery. Even the beige marble tops from Bahia, Zalszupin's favorite, resemble the free and more abstract painting developed by Serpa in the early 1960s.

The intention of the show is to expose the similarities between the industrial design of Zalszupin and the artistic practice of Ivan Serpa, during the most prolific years of their careers, the decades of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

The show also intended to elevate design to parallel art. Exhibiting an artist who created the Grupo Frente in the 1950s, whose member included Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape and Helio Oiticica, alongside one of the biggest names in national design, a pioneer in the use of curved plywood in Brazil, demonstrates the genius achieved by these masters.

The gallery intended to present an unpretentious integration between the work of each artist. On its walls, there were around 25 works by Ivan Serpa, a mixture of paintings and drawings, produced between the 1950s and 1970s. Then there were 17 pieces of furniture set informally, as arranged in a residence.
