GUILLERMO SANTOMÀ

BARCELONA
SIDE GALLERY
MAY 19 2016 - JUL 29 2016

The spring/summer exhibition presented by Side Gallery in 2016 was the first solo exhibition by the gallery for Spanish architect and designer Guillermo Santomà. The show featured a range of furniture created using glass and mirrors, pursing a game of transparency and reflection. Following his ideal ‘to create and destroy’ Santomà endeavors to deconstruct the fixed images of design. He does not work in the traditional manner of sketching before creating, his work is a constant process of deformation and creation. His desire for improvisation is perhaps a result of his pragmatic personality, not worrying about something turning out differently to how he imaged, a mistake can always be corrected, material can always be manipulated to work in your favor, is the mentality of the designer.

"His work is a constant process of deformation and creation"

Guillermo Santomà first attracted attention with the reconstruction of Casa Horta, the three-story home of the architect built in the early 20th Century. The young designer converted the house into a home, defined by elaborate colours, Spanish tiling and surrealistic structures. Since then, his work has become more familiar to the public and critics, especially projects in important institutions as CCCB in Barcelona (Centro Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona) or Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
