DESIGN AND THE INVENTION OF THE FUTURE
TRIENNALE DI MILANO
ITALY
15 SEPTEMBER - 18 DECEMBER 2005
Italian designer Joe Colombo introduces us to a fascinating universe in which you can find walls equipped with mini-bars, televisions that emerge from the ceiling and many other peculiar creations that seem to be straight out of a spy thriller. His style is known for its seventies flair and its unique yet functional shapes. In honor of the designer, the Milan Triennial host: "Joe Colombo - The Design and Invention of the Future", that is the first international exhibition to present and pay tribute to the work of Joe Colombo.
The Italian designer is noted for being highly successful in his time and for having left a legacy of design icons, such as the "Universale" chair, the "Alogena" lamp and the "Elda" armchair. The interesting thing about the exhibition is that it shows pieces and materials that have never been seen before in Colombo's work and some of them date from the beginning of his career. We find a large number of sketches, brochures, plans, models, films, photographs and original prototypes of his most outstanding pieces. In addition, the exhibition is divided into four parts showing the development of his personal life and work.
Apart from being an outstanding designer, Colombo was an elegant, charismatic and extroverted person with a great talent for communication. His appearance matched his reputation, always groomed with a pipe in his mouth, he gave the impression of being a "design dandy", whose aim was to create the most functional designs by exploring new technologies. All these qualities contribute to Joe Colombo's recognition today as one of the greatest design visionaries of the 20th century.
