About
The Daeun Decagonal Box Set reflects Dahyeon Yoo’s exploration of leather as both a structural and sculptural material. Composed of three boxes in graduated sizes, the work combines a precise decagonal geometry with the softness and natural irregularities of vegetable-tanned leather.
Each box is constructed from individual leather sections that articulate its faceted form, creating a subtle rhythm across the surface. The rounded volumes soften the underlying geometry, while seams and variations in tone remain visible as traces of the making process. Designed to function both individually and as a group, the three pieces establish a dialogue of scale, repetition, and proportion.
As the leather ages, its surface will naturally develop a richer patina, allowing the objects to evolve through time and use. The set reflects Yoo’s broader interest in bringing traditional handcraft, material sensitivity, and contemporary sculptural form into close dialogue.
Biography
Dahyeon Yoo (b. 1990s, South Korea) is a contemporary designer and artist whose work investigates the intersection of traditional Korean craft and modern material experimentation. Educated in design and craft disciplines, Yoo has developed a distinctive practice centered on reinterpreting ancestral weaving and plaiting methods through unconventional materials such as vegetable-tanned leather.
Her Harmony Series reflects a deep engagement with Korean cultural heritage, particularly the straw-weaving traditions of the Joseon Dynasty, while addressing contemporary themes of resilience, impermanence, and balance. By embracing the imperfections and natural qualities of leather, Yoo emphasizes the dialogue between fragility and strength, individual gesture and collective structure.
Positioned at the crossroads of craft and sculpture, Yoo’s works resonate with global conversations around sustainability, materiality, and the preservation of intangible heritage.
