Biography
Alfredo Barbini (b. 1912, Murano - d. 2007) comes from a family of glassmakers dating back to the 17th century. He collaborated with important design figures such as Francesco Zecchin and Napoleone Martinuzzi and later became the artistic director of the Gino Cenedese glassworks. He employed a glass treatment technique he created himself, known as 'a massello', which involved sculpting solid blocks of glass while still warm. His most famous works were the 'Aquariums', where blocks of colorless glass were inserted inside blocks of colored glass to represent marine flora and fauna.
