Heitor dos Prazeres É Meu Nome is an extensive exhibition catalogue dedicated to the multifaceted practice of Brazilian artist Heitor dos Prazeres (1898–1966). Published following the major retrospective held at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) in Rio de Janeiro in 2023, the volume brings together the many dimensions of his creative life, spanning painting, music, samba, costume, craftsmanship and design.
Curated by Raquel Barreto, Haroldo Costa and Pablo León de la Barra, the exhibition assembled more than 200 works and archival materials, offering a broad reassessment of Heitor’s contribution to twentieth-century Brazilian culture. The publication reflects this multidisciplinary approach through paintings, drawings, photographs, musical material and historical documentation, situating his work within the social and cultural transformations of post-abolition Brazil.
Of particular relevance is the catalogue’s exploration of Heitor dos Prazeres as a furniture maker and designer. Having inherited carpentry skills from his father, Eduardo dos Prazeres, Heitor worked as a cabinetmaker and incorporated painting directly into furniture. Tables and other objects became surfaces for his characteristic imagery, bringing together craftsmanship, functionality and artistic expression. Richly illustrated and presented in a bilingual Portuguese-English edition, the catalogue offers an important resource for understanding a lesser-known dimension of his practice alongside his celebrated work as a painter, composer and key figure in the history of Brazilian samba.
