Yeunhee Ryu (South Korea) is a contemporary artist and designer whose practice reimagines the expressive potential of metal through a language of warmth, fluidity, and cultural memory. Trained in metal design and craft at leading institutions in Korea and Japan—including a PhD in Metal Design from Hanyang University and an MFA from Tokyo National University of the Arts—Ryu brings together rigorous technical discipline and a deeply intuitive, material-driven approach.

Working primarily with copper and silver, Ryu challenges the conventional perception of metal as cold or rigid. Through hammering, shaping, and surface transformation, she reveals the material’s capacity to record gesture, time, and human touch. Her works are characterized by generous lines, tactile surfaces, and organic forms that evoke movement, softness, and quiet vitality. For Ryu, metal becomes not only a structural medium but also a site of emotional resonance—capable of reflecting warmth, care, and lived experience.

A central focus of her practice is the reinterpretation of traditional Korean domestic archetypes, most notably the baguni, a woven basket used in everyday life. In Ryu’s hands, the Baguni becomes a sculptural vessel that oscillates between functionality and symbolism, engaging themes of care, continuity, and community. These works situate her practice within a broader discourse on heritage and contemporary craft, demonstrating how humble, familiar objects can embody collective memory while asserting new aesthetic possibilities. Works from the Baguni series are held in prominent international collections, including Loewe.

Ryu’s ongoing exploration of material freedom is further articulated in series such as White on White (2023), in which she emphasizes form, texture, and subtle variation as intrinsic values of craft. As the artist notes, the constantly changing nature of handmade form is a privilege of the discipline itself—one that allows metal to transcend its “stubborn” nature and enter a realm of generosity, comfort, and quiet abstraction.

Her work has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions in Korea and Japan, including Gallery Maruni and Gallery Maruni-Akiya (Kobe/Tokyo, 2021–2022), Gallery Doqument in Seoul (2018), Gallery Ahwon (2013–2014), and earlier exhibitions at Batanggol Art Museum and Mokkumto Gallery. Through these presentations, Ryu has established a sustained and influential presence in the field of contemporary metalwork and design, bridging tradition and innovation with remarkable sensitivity.
