THOMAS TAKADA – VILLA DES ÉCHOS
Design Parade Toulon
June 27–28, 2025
Presented as part of the 2025 edition of Design Parade Toulon, Villa des Échos by Thomas Takada explored the intersection of materiality, ecology, and contemporary interior architecture. Within the context of the festival—a platform dedicated to supporting emerging interior architects and designers through international competition, mentorship, and exhibitions—Takada’s project interrogated the complex relationship between globalized production processes and their environmental and cultural repercussions.
The installation focused on the careful collection and reuse of locally sourced vegetal materials—leaves, branches, and pebbles—integrated with standardized metal profiles to form delicate, interdependent structures. By juxtaposing fragile organic matter with industrial elements, Takada foregrounded questions of balance, sustainability, and the perceptual alienation inherent in contemporary production. The project reflected a broader engagement with the Villa Noailles site and the region’s architectural heritage, connecting ecological awareness with spatial experience.
Takada’s presentation was recognized with the Prix Visual Merchandising décerné par CHANEL, an award highlighting the designer whose work excels in visual presentation and spatial communication within the festival context. The recognition underscores that Villa des Échos was not only conceptually rigorous but also compelling in its staging, effectively conveying the interplay between natural and industrial materials to visitors.
Supported by the Alliance for European Flax, Linen & Hemp and Feuilles d’Or Charrier, and sponsored by the Mobilier National, Villa des Échos transformed natural debris into a carefully composed interior environment. Visitors were invited to consider the physical consequences of industrial production and the ethical responsibility of designers in shaping material culture, while experiencing a poetic, contemplative intervention that resonated with the festival’s emphasis on creativity, collaboration, and international dialogue.
Design Parade Toulon, founded in 2016 as the sister event to Design Parade Hyères, provides an international platform for emerging interior architects and designers, combining competition, exhibition, workshops, and mentorship. In 2025, the festival featured a distinguished jury including Harry Nuriev (president), Alice Audouin, Olivier Gabet, India Mahdavi, and other leading figures in design and curation.
Within this framework, Villa des Échos exemplifies Takada’s practice, foregrounding site-specificity, environmental reflection, and the poetic transformation of ordinary materials. By rendering visible the delicate interdependence of natural and manufactured elements, the project questioned the assumed neutrality of design processes and encouraged visitors to reflect on their relationship with material culture. The recognition by the Prix Visual Merchandising décerné par CHANEL further highlights how the installation excelled in communicating concept through spatial design, combining aesthetic rigor with immersive experience.
The work resonates both as an aesthetic proposition and as a critique of the ecological and perceptual consequences of contemporary production, illustrating Takada’s commitment to designing with ethical awareness and imaginative rigor.
