About
"Spread of Life I" continues Hyeokjin Jung’s exploration of organic growth, material hybridity and temporal transformation. In contrast to the vertical expansion suggested in Extension of Life I, this work develops along a horizontal plane, evoking the idea of biological diffusion, cellular proliferation and spatial occupation. The broad, low profile gives the piece a grounded presence, recalling both a vessel and a landscape.
The combination of industrial aluminum, traditional ottchil lacquer, and a tofu-based organic composite produces a surface that is simultaneously luminous, tactile and conceptually unstable. The lacquer preserves and seals the form, while the organic component implies fragility and decay, creating a poetic tension between permanence and impermanence. Jung thus transforms the object into a metaphor for life itself: something that spreads, adapts and resists extinction through continuous transformation.
