About
B.S.P series originates from research on how to recycle plastic by-products. The name B.S.P is inspired by the abbreviation of the B.L.T club sandwich. In this case, B.S.P stands for By-product, Solvent, Plastic, referring to the key materials used in the production process.
The project focuses on plastic flakes generated during the making of numerous design prototypes through CNC machining or 3D printing. In collaboration with a physical chemistry laboratory, different amounts of solvent, types of plastic, and reaction times were tested. The research revealed that certain plastics melt in organic solvents after a specific period of time. Particularly, tiny flakes or small fragments resulting from failed prototypes dissolve easily in small amounts of solvent due to their large surface area.
Through this investigation, plastic typically intended for mass production is reinterpreted as a handicraft material, allowing plastic to be fused with its own by-products. The material solidifies through solvent evaporation. Resembling spilled cheese, the resulting objects arouse curiosity and propose a new aesthetic.
This process has been applied to the design of art furniture, demonstrating its potential to adapt to various shapes and colors.
Biography
Dong Hoon Sohn (South Korea, 1985) founder and designer of Atelier SOHN, Sohn develops a practice that explores the intersection between material properties and the designer’s ability to transform them. His work focuses on rethinking manufacturing processes to create objects that invite sensory transitions and new forms of interaction.
With a background in product and user experience design at Samsung Electronics, Sohn brings precision and technical depth to his sculptural and functional pieces. Since founding Atelier SOHN in 2017, he has gained international recognition through exhibitions at Milan Design Week and Paris Design Week.
Among his most notable works are the Plump Bench, the Split Chair, and the Void Side Table, which showcase his ability to blend minimal structures with playful, voluminous forms. Sohn has also collaborated with leading luxury brands such as Bottega Veneta, Vacheron Constantin, and Christofle, reinforcing his position as a rising figure in contemporary Korean design.
